My spousal equivalent used to live in Mile End. When we wanted to go out to eat but couldn’t think of a place, we always ended up at either Sala or Mondo Fritz. Sala offers good, consistent Spanish tapas. A plus for her was they have lots of great vegetarian plates on the menu (even I like ‘em) and the chorizo and mussles and other meat/seafood dishes are also quite good. The place is interesting. It is usually filled with a mix of Mile Enders and Spanish regulars – the latter seem to have two tables reserved for cards (one for the men, one for the ladies) and they seem to be there every time we’re there. This is a great place to go if you are heading to a show at the Sala Rossa (upstairs) or Casa del Popolo (across the street)
Price: Not very expensive. Usually $50-60 for two with beer and sangria included.
Beer: Griffon rousse

This is an excellent Basque resto which serves pintxos… essentially individual sized tapas. Usually 4-6 makes for a good meal for one person, which is good as they are tough to share due to their small size so its nice to be able to sample a few things. Pretty much all the pintxos on the menu are great, with some such as the octopus carpaccio, the duck confit stuffed mushrooms and the Basque cod, being excellent. I’ve been here 5 times in the past 6 months and each time it was fabulous.
Price: Usually $40-50 per person with beer, tax and tip. A little more if you get a bottle of wine.
Beer: Boreal Blanche
